Filestores achieves first ISO record management recognition in Ireland

Filestores, the Document Storage and Data Management Company and part of DMG Services has been awarded with the ISO 15489 certificate for record management. The company is the first in Ireland and one of the first in Europe to receive this new award, which measures a company’s record keeping systems and practices.

Michael Ahern, Minister for Trade and Commerce, whose department is an existing customer of Filestores, presented the award in the Department for Trade and Enterprise.

The new ISO standard, certified by the NSAI, focuses on the business principles behind records management and how organisations can establish a framework to enable a comprehensive records management programme. The standard clearly shows how a company can systematically improve its record keeping. It applies to records in any format or media, created or received by any public or private organisation during the course of its activities.

Commenting on the award, Cecil Ryan, Managing Director of Filestores and DMG Services said, “As one of the largest record management companies in the country, it is vital for our business to achieve this standard. This is further proof that Filestores systems, processes and people are the best in the business. We are proud to be leading the industry with our high quality records management service.

Effective records management is important for any business. Companies realise the benefits once they adhere to best practice in this area. With this, senior management are able to identify tangible benefits such as reduced costs and better-managed risks, thereby contributing to better corporate governance.”

Michael Ahern, Minister for Trade and Commerce added, “Managing information in the workplace is becoming increasingly important. Having a standard that benchmarks a company’s performance in records management will assist all levels of management in adhering to best practice. This assures customers that their information is not only easily retrievable but ensures that costs can also be managed efficiently.”

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) officially launched the International Standard on Records Management, ISO 15489, in October 2001. ISO 15489 standard promotes and spreads international best practice records management.
